| To
the times of "ROME", the ounce is used like unit of weight
(and also ofcurrency). Par to 1/12 of pound, than to
the age turned out to be little inferior to 500 g..
In the course of the times to the ounce they came to
correspond also length unit, reported to fractions of
the palm, of arm or 1/12 of the foot. |

the
carat and the grain
| The
used carat (0.2 g.) in the measurement
of precious stones, it has two meant: it can be weight
measure, or indicative of the fineness of the gold.
In the appraisal of precious stones, it enters in list
also the grain, par to 1/4 of carat
(0.05 g.). As fineness measure the carat indicates how
many leaves of " fine " gold there are in
the 24 ideal parts in the portion of alloy comes uniform.
The fineness comes also indicated with the millesimal.
The gold to 750 millesimal, contains 3/4 of pure gold,
equivalent to 18 carats. |
